In this video, I walk through how to turn a landscape and portrait photograph into a sketch using Photoshop. Quickly turn any portrait or landscape image into a black and white or color pencil sketch using Photoshop.

  1. Open the photograph in Photoshop.
  2. Duplicate the Background Layer
  3. Name the copy of the Background Layer BW, for Black and White
  4. Convert the BW layer into a Smart Object
  5. Add a Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer and change the Saturation of the layer to -100
  6. Select the BW layer and Invert it (Image -> Adjustment -> Invert from the menu)
  7. Change the Blend Mode of the BW layer to Color Dodge
  8. Add a Gaussian Blur to the BW layer (Filter -> Blur -> Gaussian Blur from the menu)
  9. Adjust the pixel radius to the desired value (16.2)
  10. Add a Levels Adjustment Layer and change the blend mode of the layer to Multiply
  11. Change the Opacity of the Adjustment Layer to the desired value (50-60%)
  12. Duplicate the Background Layer 
  13. Name the copy of the Background Layer Color, for Color
  14. Select the Color Layer and move it to the top layer
  15. Change the Blend Mode of the Color Layer to Color
  16. Change the Opacity of the Color Layer to the desired value (50-60%)
